How can a polymorphism increase the susceptibility to periodontal disease?
When several determined SNPs in one or more genes are present in a human
subject, sometimes they can modulate a greater susceptibility to certain
diseases, more frecquently named multifactorial diseases. They include
cardiovascular diseases and periodontal disease.
One or more SNPs cannot cause a pathology by themselves. It is necesary
one or more ambiental factors, like tobacco or bacteria in the case of
periodontal disease.
Combination of genetic and ambiental factors allow periodontal disease to develop.
