Are periodontal diseases contagious?
The principle cause periodontal diseases (gingivitis and periodontitis) are bacteria:
- Actinobacillus Actinomycetemcomitans
- P.Gingivalis
They could be transferred from person to person. They are in present in saliva, mucosa and periodontal pockets of the affected patients. The most frequent means of transmission are:
- Exchange of dental brushes
- Exchange of cutlery
- Exchange of saliva
The transmission can be:
- Vertical: from parents to children
- Horizontal: between couples
Nonetheless, should bacteria be transferred the receptor might not suffer from periodontal disease, but the risk to develop it increases
