Are periodontal diseases contagious?

The principle cause periodontal diseases (gingivitis and periodontitis) are bacteria:

• Actinobacillus Actinomycetemcomitans
• P.Gingivalis

They could be transferred from person to person. They are in present in saliva, mucosa and periodontal pockets of the affected patients. The most frequent means of transmission are:

• Exchange of dental brushes
• Exchange of cutlery
• Exchange of saliva

The transmission can be:

• Vertical: from parents to children
• Horizontal: between couples

Nonetheless, should bacteria be transferred the receptor might not suffer from periodontal disease, but the risk to develop it increases
