What's new about molecular diagnostics and periodontal disease?
Culture
techniques have been traditionally used to identify periodontal disease bacterial
species in subgingival samples. But several problems were frecquent. The
vast majority of species are anaerobe, so special techniques have to be
employed, and are laborious and require long periods of time. They involve
to mantain alive cells from samples, so many of them can die during transport
to laboratory.
PCR
based molecular diagnostics allows to detect any bacterial species within
hours, and this technique does not require alive cells, so its sensitivity
is much better, and prevalence of bacteria more real.
