What
is a genetic polymorphism?
Although
every individual from a species has the same number and type of genes,
these genes can have some modifications in base compositions that allow
a greater diversity, but without any loss of function.
If these variations exist in more than 1% of individuals within a population,
then they are called genetic polymorphisms. Because a majority of these
variations only affect one base, they are also called single-nucleotide
polymorphism or SNP.
