What
is the genetic background of periodontal disease?
Susceptibility
to a multifactorial disease, like periodontitis, is modulated by ethnic
background. It is not real to assume a common genetic background of periodontitis
for human species.
In Caucasian non-smokers periodontal patients, association of certain
SNPs in interleukin-1a and b genes can predispose to a more severe periodontitis
if no therapy is applied.
In
Asian subjects, SNPs in Fcg receptors genes can predispose to aggressive
and refractory periodontitis. Assays for these SNPs can be used in routine
clinical practice with caution.
