Applications of molecular diagnostics to periodontal disease

• When must I prescribe an antimicrobial?

  If a patient shows advanced clinical parameters and carries Pg, Bf and/or Aa, you could prescribe specific antimicrobial to adjunt to mechanical periodontal disease therapy. You should not prescribe any antimicrobial alone, because bacteria grow in biofilms, and drugs cannot arrive at optimal concentrations if you have not applied mechanical periodontal disease therapy to remove biofilm.

• Genetic test

In the next future we will be able to apply several genetic test to determine if a subject is more susceptible than other to develop a periodontitis or to advance to a more severe picture.

• Detection of individuals at risk

  If we detect periodontopathogen bacteria in a young subject, we can design a preventive planning to avoid evolution towards periodontal disease. It also can be useful in maintenance patients, so periodontitis can be stabilized for years. However, diagnosis will be more fine when genetic background of periodontitis will be discovered, and we can diagnose an individual at risk from childhood.
